Are Banks Open on Columbus Day 2018?
It was all for Christopher Columbus, billed as America's "centerpiece" celebration marking the 500th anniversary of his voyage to the New World in 1492. For example, the city of Columbus, Ohio, the largest in the country named after the explorer, remains open for business today for the first time. The exception is bond trading, which pauses for the day.
The mayor's office announced the decision in a brief, unceremonious news release Friday, avoiding the politics that have traditionally accompanied changes to the controversial federal holiday in other cities. The city only had a big enough budget to celebrate Columbus Day or Veterans Day this year, and since most of the workers are vets, officials said they chose to give them the day off in November. "Columbus Day was a big part of our lives", Suozzi said. That goes even for retailers such as Costco, which closes down for several major holidays each year but is open on Columbus Day.
Dozens of other cities and entire states, including Minnesota, Alaska, Vermont and OR, have also replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day. As with the old holiday, government offices, courts, banks and many businesses were closed.
Those cities are now honoring the history and contributions of Native Americans.

It's now Hurricane Michael and it's hitting Cuba
As forecast, Michael would be the first Category 3 or higher hurricane to hit the Panhandle since Hurricane Dennis in 2005. Heavy rains at the weekend caused 13 deaths in Central America after Michael formed off the coast of northern Honduras.
Millions of indigenous people were killed or died of disease under colonization of parts of the eastern US that began with Columbus' arrival in 1492, according to activists. "We thought it was important to honor them with that day off". Not everyone is on-board with honoring Columbus.
Amid the controversy, another person wrote that if the name Columbus is so polarizing, the city shouldn't stop at the holiday: It should change its name altogether. "The fact that the city of Columbus is taking action is a victory for everyone". Columbus was eventually arrested by the Spanish Crown and stripped of his governorship for executing Spanish citizens without a trial. But, more cities and states are deciding not to honor Columbus Day and are instead recognizing the people who were here first. Joseph Contino, board member of the Columbus Italian Festival, told the Associated Press. Hawaii celebrates Discoverers' Day on the second Monday of October.
It's not only Native populations that are harmed when we continue to celebrate Columbus year after year.
