Vietnam can breathe a sigh of relief as the massive storm, which has killed 64 people in the Philippines and two others in China, turned into a tropical depression at 10 a.m. on Monday after it made landfall on the coast of Jiangmen city, in China's Guangdong Province. The Hong Kong Observatory said Mangkhut was the most powerful storm to hit the city since 1979.
Residents hunkered down in their apartments, and streets in the usually buzzing city were deserted Sunday.
Videos and photographs show windows of some of the city's commercial skyscrapers smashed in the high winds.
Low-lying areas, including Lei Yue Mun, Heng Fa Chuen in Chai Wan, and Tai O were seriously flooded, and some people who live in tall residential towers claimed they could feel their buildings shaking. A red alert remained in effect for parts of southern China, where the typhoon was moving westward.
People travel through a flooded road brought about by Typhoon Mangkhut, which hit the northern Philippines on Saturday.
As the storm passed south of Hong Kong, trees were snapped in half and roads blocked, while some windows in tower blocks were smashed and skyscrapers swayed, as they are created to do in intense gales. The agency also issued a landslide warning, and urged residents to keep away from steep slopes. Roads were littered with fallen trees, some completely impassable, while glass from blown-out windows glistened along the sidewalks.
Hong Kong can breathe again. There have been no reports of fatalities.
Casinos in the gambling centre of Macau were shut down and some 20,000 homes were left without power, the South China Morning Post reported. Severe flooding was seen on Sunday in parts of Macau, where residents still remember the destruction caused by Typhoon Hato a year ago, a storm that killed 10 and injured hundreds of others.
Flights via Shenzhen Airport were all cancelled on Sunday until 8 am Monday.

Typhoon Mangkhut appears to have had the strongest winds in Hong Kong since Typhoon Rose in 1971.
On Saturday morning, the typhoon ravaged through the northeastern Cagayan province in Luzon Island, Philippines' largest and most populated.
The mayor of a small Philippine town says he is "99 percent sure" that dozens of people missing in a landslide triggered by the onslaught of Typhoon Mangkhut have been killed.
The typhoon struck at the start of the rice and corn harvesting season in the Philippines' northern breadbasket, prompting farmers to scramble to save what they could of their crops, Cagayan Gov. Manuel Mamba said. About 87, 000 people were evacuated. "The storm slowed as it made landfall in mainland China's Pearl River Delta region".
Typhoon Mangkhut is now weakening over southern China.
