Musk previously hinted the passenger for the next-generation BFR (politely known as the Big Falcon Rocket) might be Japanese.
SpaceX said it will name the first passenger to travel to the moon since the United States' Apollo missions ended in 1972 at an event Monday evening at the company's headquarters and rocket factory in the Los Angeles suburb of Hawthorne.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced Monday night that entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa would be the first private person to fly solo around the moon aboard the company's Big Falcon Rocket (BFR) launch vehicle.
Those comments add additional color to the updated narrative gradually trickling out of SpaceX as the company pushes towards a finalized "flight design" for the Mars-bound launch vehicle and spaceship, a critical step that must precede integrated design reviews and flight tests.
Last year, Musk said the BFR could be used for trips to the moon and other celestial destinations, as well as for suborbital point-to-point trips on Earth. The BFR ship won't be making a stopover on the lunar surface, though.
Given that this new BFR rocket, as it's dubbed, has yet to be built, the flight presumably is at least a few years off.
As curiosity mounts over the futuristic BFR, Musk tweeted 3 images, showing it will consist of a first stage with engines and fuel systems, and a second stage with the spacecraft where the passengers will ride.

Typhoon Mangkhut leaves trail of destruction in China
On Monday morning, shopkeepers in Macau were hosing down their stores which had been caked in mud after the floodwaters receded. At least 64 died in landslides or by drowning, the Associated Press reported , citing Philippine National Police officials.
At the time, SpaceX said two people signed a deal with SpaceX to make a trip around the moon aboard a Falcon Heavy rocket.
But Musk threw a curve ball during a Falcon Heavy press conference earlier this year when he told reporters that, for the time being, SpaceX had no plans to certify the Falcon Heavy for human spaceflight. The spacecraft is meant to buzz around the moon without landing.
The BFR spacecraft's shape is reminiscent of the space shuttle, the bus-like USA spaceships that carried astronauts to space 135 times from 1981 to 2011.
Going to the Moon could be far quicker.
Russian and Chinese companies are also working on space tourism plans.
Two high executives announced departures from Tesla, and the diver sued Musk on Monday.
