Keys, an American, was slated to play Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic, a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victor over lucky-loser Magdalena Frech of Poland.

The two-time champion at Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic has reached at least the quarter-finalsat her four three hardcourt tournaments, after 2017 Us Open, 2018 Indian Wells and Miami.

Third-seeded Williams is the highest remaining seed after the withdrawals of Spaniard Garbine Muguruza and Keys due to injuries.

Meanwhile, Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Ana Bogdan 6-2 6-1, eighth seed Yulia Putintseva defeated Jennifer Brady 7-5 6-2 and Saisai Zheng overcame Ysaline Bonaventure 6-4 6-4.

No.3 seed Venus Williams was forced to go all the way against Heather Watson before booking her place in the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic quarterfinals with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 win, but the WTA World No.14 has said that it was ideal for her. Throughout the evening match, her serves routinely exceeded 115 miles per hour. Down one break at 0-3 in the third, and Williams with the advantage after the second deuce, Watson served an ace.

"In third I think Venus really just raised her level, I don't think I did much wrong or changed dramatically. I have been feeling pain in my wrist over the last couple of days and felt worse today", Keys said.

Williams then lost finals to Marion Bartoli in 2009 and Johanna Konta two years ago, but she remains a force to be reckoned with.

"This event is one of my favourites and I was looking forward to playing here in San Jose." she added.

Keys, the defending champion, pulled out with a right wrist injury before taking the court for her second-round opener against Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic.
