The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences's board of governors approved several changes to the annual Oscars show last night during their meeting Tuesday night in which they re-elected John Bailey to a second term as president. The 92nd Oscars have also been brought forward from 23 February to 9 February 2020, though the eligibility dates for Oscar releases and the voting period will remain the same.
On Wednesday, the organization announced a number of impending changes to the Oscars, including its intention to add a new category for achievement in popular film.
While details of the popular film category are yet to be announced, it could be a way of superhero films finally breaking through to the Oscars with the acclaimed box office hit Black Panther possibly making an appearance.
Those winning moments will then be edited down for air later in the broadcast.
What do you think of these changes coming to the Oscars? In 2019, the date already set - February 24 - will be maintained.
It's been almost 17 years since the film Academy added a new category, best animated film.
Criticised in the past for ignoring blockbusters and genre films, the move will hopefully mean a more balanced view of the American film industry - although the Best Picture nominations are unlikely to change.
Gaza: Palestinian teen dies of wounds sustained in peaceful protests
Also on Sunday, the Israeli military said it fired toward a vehicle used by Palestinian balloon-launchers in Gaza on Sunday. Critics say it amounts to collective punishment of the coastal territory's two million residents.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 May Use GUNN's Script
Warner Bros. and DC especially are reportedly interested in recruiting Gunn if he were to part ways with Disney. One senior executive is even quoted as saying "I'd work with him in a heartbeat".
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has launched its 'FIX PUBG' campaign to quell bugs
PUBG Corp. describes its plans for matchmaking as "a complicated system to build and get right", and therefore offers no promises about what will change.
An outstanding popular film category may also go some way to allay criticism that numerous films acknowledged by the Oscars are "increasingly irrelevant" and do not reflect what the viewing public want to watch. The Academy's board of governors is aware that the world is changing and they need to adapt in order to stay relevant.
The next Oscars ceremony will take place in Hollywood on February 24, as previously announced. In addition, some are pointing out that quality pictures such as Black Panther may be taken out of consideration for Best Picture accreditation, by being lumped into the Best Popular Film category.
The Academy did not offer specifics about how the category will be defined. But they've sought to address it, in years past, by zipping through the technical awards (which are held and taped days before the main Oscars telecast) and hectoring presenters to keep their acceptance speeches pithy.
To keep the ceremony to three hours, the academy vows to present only select categories live.
Among the changes is to present fewer categories live.
We'll wait on more details about the proposed category, but meanwhile, I'm still holding out for a category that finally recognizes stunt performance in film.
