This year's outbreak is on pace to surpass last year's cases, when 118 people from 15 states and the District of Columbia were reported to have measles.

In the recent case, which is not reflected in CDC numbers, a 16-year-old girl visiting Alaska on a cruise ship last week was contagious after contracting measles during a previous trip to Thailand. The 2014 outbreak was the greatest number of cases since measles was eliminated in the U.S.in 2000.

The 107 reported cases stretch across the country, and include reports from Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and the District of Colombia. The first symptoms are a high fever that may spike to 105 degrees, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. Tiny white spots may also appear inside the mouth. Complications can arise, including pneumonia, encephalitis and death.
Officials are encouraging all residents and visitors who haven't been immunized to get vaccinated. "Measles is a highly contagious disease that can have serious complications for babies and children".
The measles vaccine - known as the MMR or measles, mumps and rubella vaccine - is very effective.
The CDC recommends children get two doses of the vaccine, starting with the first dose at 12 to 15 months of age, and the second dose at 4 through 6 years of age. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says some of those confirmed cases were reported locally.
