Similar to what we've seen from Google and Apple over the last couple months, Facebook just announced new tools coming to the Facebook and Instagram apps that are created to help you use them less. Tap any bar to see your total time for that day. The dashboard is far from flawless - it will only show your daily average for that particular device - but it could give you that much-needed reality check.
The tools will let people set themselves time limits for using the apps, mute notifications temporarily and view a dashboard showing their use.
According to the company, it wants time spent on Facebook and Instagram to be "positive and inspiring" - neither of which are terms you'd generally associate with social media in any form.
Facebook's David Ginsberg and Instagram's Ameet Ranadive said in a blogpost: "We developed these tools based on collaboration and inspiration from leading mental health experts and organisations, academics, our own extensive research and feedback from our community". (The company notes research has shown people who use social media passively are more likely to be negatively affected by it.) By allowing people to more actively manage their time in the apps, they might just be more "intentional" about how they spend that time, Facebook claims. When they do roll out, though, you'll be able to access them by going to Settings on either app.Читайте также: Another Chipotle Is Closed After Customers Complain of Getting Sick
Muting notifications, so you don't get distracted by people liking your photo of the grilled quinoa smoothie you had for breakfast.
"It's our responsibility to talk openly about how time online impacts people - and we take that responsibility seriously", stated Facebook.
These tools are rolling out to both apps today and should be available for all users soon.
That Facebook's first attempt at limiting users' time in their apps is underwhelming isn't necessarily surprising.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
