At least 14 people were killed after an natural disaster measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit the island of Lombok in Indonesia on Sunday morning.

Fathurrahman said many injured people who were treated outside a damaged clinic were evacuated to the main hospital farther away after more ambulances reached the devastated location in East Lombok's Sembalun village.

The authorities are expecting to find more injured people buried under the rubble.

The 6.4 magnitude quake struck the island next to Bali early on Sunday morning, around 6:47am local time (8:47am AEST).

It was quickly followed by an aftershock of magnitude 5.4 centred in the same area.

In East Lombok province and the provincial capital of Mataram, the tremors lasted about 10 seconds, forcing residents to flee their homes onto streets and fields, Reuters quoted Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho as saying.

Dozens of houses and buildings were damaged and the quake was felt in Bali, but there were no casualties or damaged reported there.

"Thirteen people have died, hundreds of people were injured and thousands of homes were damaged in the quake in East Lombok".

The epicentre of the shallow quake struck 50 km (30 miles) northeast of Lombok´s main city Mataram, the United States Geological Survey said, far from the main tourist spots on the south and west of the island.

At least 10 people died in the quake.

The Lombok quake struck at 6:47 am and was only 7 km, a shallow depth that would have amplified its effect.

No tsunami alert has been issued.

Like Bali, Lombok is known for pristine beaches and mountains.

"We were still sleeping when we felt the natural disaster, so we rushed outside of our building".

Quakes are common in the country, which is located on the seismically active "Ring of Fire" that surrounds the shores of the Pacific Ocean. However, the region remains acutely alert to temblors that might trigger tsunamis.
