A United States federal grand jury on Friday indicted 12 Russian military intelligence officers on charges of hacking the computer networks of 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party, the Justice Department said.
The indictment alleges that beginning in March 2016, the GRU agents began targeting over 300 employees and volunteers of the Clinton campaign, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and the DNC.
The indictment says the agents transferred stolen Democratic Party documents to the GRU-leased IL computer in April, 2016.
Those comments - and another set of remarks Friday in which he again called the Mueller probe a "witch hunt" - came after he'd already been briefed by Rosenstein about the coming indictments. It should all make for an interesting meeting of President Trump and Putin next week in Helskinki. While the indictment does not name the state board, IL election officials acknowledged in August of that year that their database was hacked, but downplayed the impact and did not identify the alleged hackers.

The group also allegedly conspired to hack into computers of state election boards, secretaries of State and USA companies that supplied software and other technology related to election administrations. Before Friday, 20 people and three companies had been charged in the investigation.
That evening, the indictment says, the Russians attempted to break into email accounts used by Clinton's personal office, along with 76 Clinton campaign email addresses.
"The internet allows foreign adversaries to attack Americans in new and unexpected ways", Rosenstein said.
