"But the operation isn't over".
On 23 June, 12 boys and their coach went to explore a cave after football practice in northern Thailand.
The boys' parents maintained a constant vigil during the search. An official Australian group has followed a USA military team, British cave experts, Chinese lifesaving responders and several other volunteer groups from various countries.
The U.S. Pacific Command sent a 30-person rescue team to northern Thailand to aid the desperate search, which began when a mother reported her son had not returned from soccer practice. "Please find them soon". The football team - the Wild Boars - had ridden their bicycles to the cave, parking them out front.
Dive teams worked around the clock.
At the heart of the search is a T-junction about a kilometer from the cave entrance. The divers are aiming for a sandy chamber on higher ground in the cave, where they believe the group would be safe.
Divers from Thailand's elite navy SEAL unit had been focusing on an elevated mound inside the cave which cavers have named "Pattaya Beach", which could have provided the boys with a refuge when rains flooded the cave.
Divers had to pull themselves along with rope against powerful currents in the cave's water. The lull also gave rescuers confidence to push forward in an area of the subterranean labyrinth they had hoped the boys and their coach were waiting to be saved.

"(If) the group went to the left side, there is ... a very narrow space and very small channel.
"Our mission (is) not done yet", Osatanakorn said.
"So we will run two operations, opening this channel to get through and maintaining so all the rescue team can get inside and work there".
So far, rescuers have been able to pump excess water from the cave and divert groundwater as well while searching for a safe way to reach the team.
But come Sunday, the weather cleared and rescuers immediately used water pumping machines to clear the chamber in order to establish a base deep inside the cave.
Alongside the draining operation, rescuers are working on a secondary plan to access the caves from above.
Doctors say the boys could survive for many days without food, but much would depend on whether they found water clean enough to drink.
The mothers and families of the missing boys have held prayer sessions at the entrance to the cave, where there is a shrine with a statue of the Buddha.
