Divers have thus far been thwarted by muddy water rising up in sections of the cave and forcing rescuers to withdraw over safety concerns, The Associated Press reports.

A base camp was set up three kilometres inside the cave over the weekend - stocked with food, medicine, water and hundreds of oxygen tanks - allowing the divers to stay in the depths for longer stretches.

Other efforts focused on finding shafts on the mountainside that might serve as a back door to the blocked-off areas where the missing team was thought to be sheltering. Rescuers explore several options, including training them to use scuba equipment.
The team has been missing since Saturday, June 23, after getting stuck in the tunnels due to treacherous weather.
