Blockbuster Video down to one U.S. store

Even after receiving a gift of movie memorabilia from Russell Crowe's career, through John Oliver's show, "Last Week Tonight", the Debarr road store in Anchorage and the College Road store in Fairbanks will be closing. The company's North Pole location closed in March, leaving only five locations left at that time.

By the end of 2018, there will be only one remaining Blockbuster Video location in the United States - in Bend, Oregon.

Kevin Daymude, general manager of the Anchorage store, said the closing of both stores has not only to do with the ending of both leases but also the economy.

It was the great poet Percy Shelley who once wrote: "And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Blockbuster, Video Store of Video Stores; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

In recent years, Blockbuster stores have vanished in most of the country. On Tuesday, July 17 they will reopen for an inventory sale at noon through July and August. While all Blockbuster corporate stores have been closed in the USA for some time, a third party licensed the name from Dish and had been operating Blockbuster stores in recent years.

"It's always kind of a kick in the trousers every time we close a store".

Jeremy Lin traded by Brooklyn Nets to Atlanta Hawks
The Nets have agreed to trade Lin to the Atlanta Hawks , a person with knowledge of the deal said early Friday. Spencer Dinwiddie stepped in while Lin was out and became one of the NBA's most improved players.

In the Fairbanks area, Vey said the challenge of getting speedy, affordable internet service is one thing that brings people to the store.

"It's going to be insane", Daymude said of the temporary reopening.

It's not clear yet what will happen to the memorabilia, Payne said.

At its highest, most profitable point, Blockbuster was running close to 9,000 stores in America. "The loyalty was huge, I mean they were like family and we'll miss them desperately". "I'm not sure what we're going to do with it".

Now, about a quarter of the customers at her store are tourists. "We have a bunch of 19-year-olds working here - it's fun explaining to them what a floppy disk is". "If you'd asked me 14 years ago, there's no way I'd thought we'd be the last one. It just seems a little crazy" General Manager Sandi Harding said, adding that she doesn't plan on shutting up shop.
