An armed suspect who allegedly shot his grandmother and another person barricaded himself in a supermarket and then shot a woman dead in the United States city of Los Angeles before being taken into custody on Saturday (July 21), police said.
Police at the scene said a number of people inside the store were held against their will for three hours. He held his hands in the air and quickly dropped to his knees as SWAT officers surrounded him and took him into custody. Both stores were also on lockdown and no one was injured. Police fired at the driver, shattering the store's glass doors, while those inside the store took cover and laid on the floor as the suspect ran inside, he said.
The 28-year-old man, who was being chased by police after he was suspected of repeatedly shooting his grandmother and another woman in a separate part of the city, crashed his auto outside Trader Joe's, where he exchanged gunfire with police and entered the store. Authorities said paramedics tried to revive the woman, now identified as Melyda Corado, but she was pronounced dead.
During the chase, Atkins fired at officers, blowing out the car's back window, and there was more shooting before the auto crashed into a pole outside the Trader Joe's, followed by another shootout with police, Police Chief Michel Moore said. Police believe Corado was shot inside the store, possibly during this shootout.
Kohles he was terrified and others around him were sobbing. Among them was a police officer carrying a small child, he said.
The suspect was fleeing from officers in a Toyota Camry after allegedly shooting his girlfriend and his grandmother earlier on Saturday.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said a 20-year-old female patient has been transferred to a hospital in fair condition.
Five hostages were freed as the suspect walked out of the store in handcuffs, according to eyewitnesses. At least one officer returned fire, he added.
Police said the older woman was the suspect's grandmother, and he was driving her auto when he wrecked it near the Trader Joe's. At about the same time, other officers went into the store and rushed out Kolhes and others near him.
