Michigan Basketball Coach John Beilein Receives Contract Extension

The 65-year-old Beilein has coached at MI for 11 seasons with a 248-143 record.

John Beilein isn't going anywhere.

Beilein was a candidate for the Detroit Pistons' head-coaching vacancy, having twice met with the organization, including an interview in Detroit as recently as last Thursday.

MI coach John Beilein says he's staying with the Wolverines after interviewing last week for the Detroit Pistons' coaching vacancy. Last year's team won a school-record 33 games before falling to Villanova in the title game. On Wednesday, he tweeted that he would be coming back to MI next season and "in the years to come".

Retaining Beilein is a massive victory for a MI program that has ascended into the Big Ten's upper tier under his leadership.

"We are thrilled that John Beilein will be our coach now and into the future", MI athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement.

Beilein's revised contract at MI was in the works prior to his discussions with the Pistons.

One of basketball's most innovative offensive minds will be staying at the college level.

When Beilein's program hit a bit of a rut, he adapted by bringing in new assistants to help shore up his team's weaknesses at the defensive end.

Beilein has led to the team to two national championship game appearances, two Big Ten regular season titles and two Big Ten Tournament championships.

"I have changed like the wind", Beilein said before this year's NCAA Tournament.
