The first death in West Virginia related to an outbreak of hepatitis A has occurred in Kanawha County, health officials said Thursday, May 24. The outbreak in Kentucky is genetically linked to other hepatitis A outbreaks in California, Utah and MI, she said.
On Wednesday health officials urged hepatitis A vaccinations for restaurant and food service employees in Kanawha and Putnam counties.
Of the 121 cases in all of West Virginia, most have been in Putnam County and Kanawha County.
The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department says the risk of hepatitis A transmission to the public remains low, but strongly recommends food service workers and other high-risk populations, such as those who use illegal drugs, get inoculated against the virus.

Like several other states, Kentucky is dealing with a statewide outbreak of Hepatitis A. The counties are Boyd, Bullitt, Carter, Greenup, Hardin, Jefferson, McCracken, Meade, Montgomery and Warren. Hardest hit is Jefferson County, which includes Louisville.

The health department news release said all Kentucky students in kindergarten through 12th grade, beginning July 1, must receive two doses of the hepatitis A vaccine to attend school, or a provisional certificate of immunization unless a parent claims an exemption. All children under 19 years who do not have private insurance coverage for vaccines, including uninsured and TennCare-eligible children, may be vaccinated through the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program by their health care provider or at any local health department.
