In one particularly effective ad, Braun walked around his hometown of Jasper carrying cardboard cutouts of Rokita and Messer in identical suits while asking bystanders if they could tell the two apart. Messer and Rokita tardily tried to remind voters that Braun was a former Democrat who had once (gasp!) voted for a gas-tax increase in the legislature.
Recently, the contest in West Virginia has obtained the most national attention. Joe Donnelly, Ind., in November. The Indiana GOP senate primary was a hard-fought race that found the candidates trying to prove how close they aligned with President Donald Trump.
Braun's victory was an outcome few expected when he launched his campaign in August against the more established political brands of Messer and Rokita.
The Republican primary race was mostly defined by personal attacks instead of policy differences, as each candidate was anti-abortion, pro-gun rights and pro-Trump.
Rokita donned Trump's signature "Make America Great Again" hat in his ads and campaigned with the slogan "Defeat the Elite".
Last spring, before either candidate even officially declared, Rokita attacked Messer's wife for the thousands of dollars she'd been paid as a government contractor, which prompted Messer to say that Rokita was "lying about [his] family".
"I'm going there to get the job done and come back home, and the only people I'll owe anything to is the voters of Indiana", Braun concluded.

Donnelly, who had raised $9.9 million through mid-April, said he is not concerned about Braun's capacity for self-funding his campaign.

Messer now represents the state's sixth congressional district and has served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 2003-2006, and he is also a former Executive Director of the state GOP. We need someone who will support the kinds of things that have made IN a leading state for job creation, financial strength and stability, and workforce development. "You don't work for the president, you don't work for a party - you work for the people of IN". I've long said that we need to see less of Washington in IN, and more of in IN Washington.
Braun supports building a wall on the U.S.'s southern border.
Braun is a multi-millionaire who loaned over $5.4 million to his own campaign, outspending each of his opponents roughly 2-to-1. "He voted against tax reform".

Indiana Republican Party Chairman Kyle Hupfer issued a statement Friday saying that no matter who won the GOP primary election, the nominee will be "a strong conservative" and "a steadfast supporter of the Trump-Pence agenda" and will have "a track record of delivering real results" in Congress, the General Assembly or the private sector.
It's been a busy primary season. He'll take on potentially vulnerable Republican incumbent Jackie Walorski.
Mike Braun has captured the Republican Senate nomination, after a bitter race against two IN congressmen.
That's because Mike Braun will provide President Trump with a new partner in the Senate, working to advance conservative, Hoosier values. "It will provide the Democrats an terrible lot of free opposition research".
Donnelly is no typical Democrat. He'll remind Hoosiers that Donnelly isn't the moderate he claims to be.
