Lewis went after former LSU star Odell Beckham Jr. for his lifestyle choices this offseason, claiming the New York Giants wide receiver has "removed God from his life" and is "crying out for help" with his decisions.
Shurmur said Monday morning he had not yet spoken with Beckham that day and thus was unsure how long Beckham would remain in New Jersey and attend the nine-week offseason program.
"I really believe that Odell is a professional and he wants to be great. He wants to be great", Shurmur said, via the team's official Twitter feed.
Beckham and Olivier Vernon notably spent much of the offseason training program last spring elsewhere and away from the team.
"I just think it's very important that we're very professional, we communicate well together, and then there is going to be a transfer of information", he said.
Beckham Jr missed the end of last season due to an ankle injury he occurred in October against the Los Angeles Chargers. The 25-year-old talent has been one of the game's best receivers, but his inability to keep his composure on and off the field has made him a liability to the franchise that drafted him 13th-overall in 2014.

Chelsea's Eden Hazard left unhappy after West Ham draw at Stamford Bridge
The Blues were in control of the match but a number of missed chances meant they were always in danger of letting the game slip. If West Ham can pocket £5million for a player who only has 15 minutes of first-team football for them, they should take it.
Beckham is entering the final season of his contract. "So that's why I raised my hand and I told him: 'I'm here whenever you need me'".
On Monday, Lewis appeared to confuse Justin Bieber, who partied with Beckham and other Giants during an infamous excursion to Miami days before a desultory playoff loss to the Packers, with fellow pop star Justin Timberlake, while agreeing with Cowherd's assertion that Beckham's life is "less football today" than it was when he played at LSU. "I'll speak with him and also devote my 2 pennies about everything, but he's must understand exactly what he feels would be ideal for him to get prepared and perform at a higher degree".
"I started to see he started to distance himself a little more and a little more and a little more".
Which means this saga will continue to unfold, one day at a time, until Beckham gets a contract or a new address.
"I think over the years you just can't get caught up with what's being said on TV or in the news or what people assume is happening", Manning said. "I want him to be a Giant".
