Since coming to power in April 2018, after years of civil unrest in the nation, 43-year-old Abiy Ahmed has started mending relations with Eritrea following decades of conflict between the countries.
Awol Allo, a fellow Ethiopian and an associate professor of law at Keele University in Britain, said Abiy deserved the prize for his role in ending the 20-year war between Ethiopia and Eritrea - a largely pointless war over disputed border territory that came at a huge financial and human cost to both countries.
She said many challenges still remained in the region, but said she hoped the prize would help encourage Mr Ahmed's efforts.
Along with the notoriety, Abiy will receive a cash award of 9 million Swedish krona, or about $915,000. In close cooperation with Isaias Afwerki, the President of Eritrea, Abiy Ahmed quickly worked out the principles of a peace agreement to end the long "no peace, no war" stalemate between the two countries.
We're going to find out the recipient of the 2019 Nobel peace prize in less than an hour, so stay tuned.
The committee says the breakthrough was Abiy's willingness to accept an arbitration ruling by an global boundary commission in 2002.
