Speaking to a small gathering before her arrest, Fonda decried the "man-made crisis" of climate change and said she and other activists would be returning to Capitol Hill "every Friday at 11:00, rain or shine or snow or blizzard or whatever", for a series of rallies.
Later as Fonda was led away the crowds applauded her and shouted, 'We love you Jane!' She was protesting with over a dozen other people.
On the topic of climate change, Fonda says she has been inspired by environmental activists like Greta Thunberg, a 15-year-old whose campaigning has gained worldwide recognition.
"What we're facing is so important and so urgent, it doesn't matter".
Along with Fonda, speakers at Friday's launch event preceding the civil disobedience included Keya Chatterjee, executive director of U.S. Climate Action Network; high school senior and climate striker Jerome Foster; author and activist Naomi Klein; Annie Leonard, executive director of Greenpeace USA; biologist and author Sandra Steingraber; and Kerene N. Tayloe, director of federal legislative affairs at WE ACT for Environmental Justice.
