Cokie Roberts, the ABC News and NPR journalist whose death from breast cancer was announced by ABC News today, is being remembered as a top-rank reporter, a pioneer for women in media and one of broadcast news' savviest Beltway analysts.
She covered Capitol Hill for NPR beginning in 1978, when she reported on the Panama Canal Treaty, then served as congressional correspondent for more than a decade, according to ABC News.
Roberts said she would often offer this advice to younger women navigating political journalism in Washington: "Duck and file", Roberts said in an interview with The Television Academy Foundation.
She was the daughter of Hale Boggs, a U.S. representative and House majority leader from Louisiana who died in an Alaska plane crash in 1972, and the late Lindy Boggs, who was elected to Congress after his death. She was also a correspondent for PBS' MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour and worked as the public broadcaster's senior news analyst.
Mother Jones' editor-in-chief Clara Jeffery said Roberts "broke down barriers for women journalists and had a remarkable life". Among her career highlights is her work as co-anchor of This Week with Sam Donaldson from 1996 to 2002, continuing on as a regular panelist under the Sunday morning news program's current iteration hosted by George Stephanopoulos. "Cokie's kindness, generosity, sharp intellect and thoughtful take on the big issues of the day made ABC a better place and all of us better journalists".
"I've been blessed in my life with been a long and happy marriage that produced two wonderful children who have in turn each produced three spectacular grandchildren and that is by far the best part", she said in 2013.
