On Aug. 23, the first death of an individual hospitalized with severe respiratory illness associated with vaping was reported in an IL resident.
The name and age of the IL patient has not been released.
The number of cases of people reported to IDPH who have used e-cigarettes or vaped and have been hospitalized with respiratory symptoms has doubled in the past week. CDC has been warning about the identified and potential dangers of e-cigarettes and vaping since these devices first appeared.
Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that 193 people in 22 states have contracted severe respiratory illnesses after vaping.
'Vaping exposes users to many different substances for which we have little information about related harms - including flavourings, nicotine, cannabinoids and solvents'.
CDC Director Robert Redfield said: "This tragic death in IL reinforces the serious risk associated with e-cigarette products". Some even use e-cigarettes to smoke concentrated THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

Dr Aaron Scott, from the University of Birmingham, said this could account for the higher number of health problems so far in the US. Experts, however, have long warned that there could be negative health side effects to vaping, and we seem to be seeing that right now. "I did not think that we were dealing with a safe practice to start with".
Dr Scott said: 'We only have evidence for short-term and in the short-term it's definitely harmful.
'Often the devices will be at the end of a supermarket aisle whereas cigarettes are in a locked area. CDC officials said they do not have a breakdown of how numerous sick people vaped THC.
The state of San Francisco has become the first major city to ban the sale of e-cigarettes.
"The severity of illness people are experiencing is alarming and we must get the word out that using e-cigarettes and vaping can be risky", said Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health.
