More than two dozen local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Federal Protective Service, were in Portland Saturday to help police there monitor the rally that's expected to draw demonstrators from around the U.S.
That attack, during which police say the suspect killed two people while ranting racist and anti-Muslim slurs, sparked discussions about the state's ugly history of white supremacy. At least one person was arrested.
A gathering is being planned by a man called Joe Biggs, who used to work for Infowars, the fringe media company run by a right-wing conspiracist. In the days leading up the event Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said people who espoused hate or engaged in violence were "not welcome". Warning any would-be violent counter-protesters, Donald Trump said events will be "watched very closely".
The President wrote: 'Major consideration is being given to naming ANTIFA an "ORGANIZATION OF TERROR".
It isn't clear what Trump meant in his tweet as there's no mechanism for the government to declare a domestic organisation a terror group.
The demonstrations this weekend come two years after the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville turned violent and just two weeks after authorities say a man slaughtered 22 people in El Paso, Texas, in an outpouring of his hate toward Mexicans.
