Known for his music in movies like Kabhie Kabhie, Trishul, Razia Sultan, Noorie and Umrao Jaan, Khayyam sahib has certainly left behind a musical legacy that can never be recreated. And as loved ones and fans gathered to bid adieu to the composer par excellence, many Bollywood celebrities too marked their presence and paid their last respects, including Gulzar, Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam. The composer had been receiving treatment for a lung infection at a Mumbai hospital since July 28. He told The Indian Express that Zahur Khayyam breathed his last at 9:30 pm. He wrote on Twitter,"The country will remain grateful to Khayyam Sahab for giving us some of the most memorable compositions, which will be remembered forever".

He is survived by his singer wife Jagjit Kaur. "Great musician and a man with a kind heart, Khayyam sahab isn't with us anymore". Veteran Bollywood Singer Lata Mangeshkar has penned down a heartfelt note for Khayyam on her Twitter account. With Khayyam sahab, an era of music has ended. His awards also include the likes of a National Award apart from other tributes for his various works.
