Former South African President Jacob Zuma is appearing before a judicial panel for the first time to answer accusations that he consented to and benefited from widespread looting during his nine-year rule.
Zuma's lawyer, Muzi Sikhakhane, said he had reservations about the ex-president appearing before the commission, complaining that his client hasn't been given sufficient opportunity to prepare for questions he may face.
He was replaced by incumbent President Cyril Ramaphosa.
A number of former senior members of government testified that they had been told by the Gupta brothers about their imminent appointment by Zuma about their appointment as ministers even before the former President had called them.
Mr. Zuma has always denied any wrong doing.
Zuma pointed to covert global intelligence operations, multiple assassination attempts and fierce factional battles as examples of the methods undertaken to remove him from the public eye.
Former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene, who was sacked by Zuma in 2015, testified that Zuma pushed policies on nuclear power and aviation that were created to benefit the Gupta family. "Did I auction Johannesburg?" he said.
"This commission, according to those who are implementing things, must be the grave of Zuma", he said.
The allegations focus on his relationship with the controversial Gupta family, which was accused of influencing cabinet appointments and winning lucrative state tenders through corruption.
