As per the WinFuture report, Qualcomm is said to be working on two new Snapdragon Wear chips which carry codenames WTP2700 and WTP429W. According to the company's claims, the Qualcomm 215 SoC offers a 50 percent jump in performance than its immediate predecessor.
This is a big upgrade from the previous 2 series Snapdragon chip and it means that the next generation of budget phones in the $100 range will be significantly better than before.
As per the company, the chipset is targeted at Android phones which are priced around $75 to $120 and will debut in commercial phones later this year. The 215 CPU fills a rather large void. The Snapdragon 429 is a popular chipset among budget smartphones, with devices like the Nokia 3.2 powered by it.
Qualcomm may finally be developing a processor for the wearables market. Hence a refresh in the segment was long overdue. This allows users to have multiple SIMs in their device. A smaller fabrication process means greater energy efficiency. While the 14nm and even 10nm fabrication processes are already mainstream, SoC manufacturers are already actively shifting to the new 7nm fabrication process. An integrated Qualcomm Hexagon DSP allows for low-power sensor and audio processing. The new chipset also features the Adreno 308 GPU which is the same GPU on the Snapdragon 425 chipset.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 215 is based on 64-bit architecture, which is first in the SD200 series. This enables smooth graphics for casual gaming. The dual ISP significantly improves camera support. Camera resolution also gets a boost to 13MP from 8MP on the 210. The chipset will also support 64-bit apps and operating systems including the full suite of Android as well as Android Go. It supports the HD+ (1520 x 720p) displays that we see on budget phones and also 19.5:9 aspect ratio support.
The Qualcomm 215 shines in the connectivity department as well. It supports dual-camera configuration and has a slightly faster processor speed. Both SIMs can handle VoLTE calls, and reach up to 150 Mbps download speeds with a Cat 4 radio. Many of these features were earlier a selling point for more premium smartphones. But now affordable and entry-level devices too will pack them.
Qualcomm has significantly accelerated the design, development, and deployment of the new 215 SoC. Before you freakout, don't take "low-end" as being bad for a watch. While we are excited that Qualcomm may actually be making a processor that will serve the wearables market well, we've heard the song before.
