In this courtroom artist's sketch, defendant Jeffrey Epstein, left, listens as accuser Annie Farmer, second from right, speaks during a bail hearing in federal court Monday in NY.
If you haven't been in a particularly isolated cave for the past few weeks, you're undoubtedly familiar with the allegations against the mysterious alleged sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, allegations which recently led to an arrest on suspicion of the sex trafficking of minors. Secondly, it was a foreign-issued passport and listed his residence as Saudi Arabia. They argued he should be allowed to live pre-trial at his Manhattan mansion - a home that prosecutors say would be a "gilded cage". They said in court filings that Epstein's wealth makes him a major flight risk, as he owns a private jet as well as six homes, including a private island in the US Virgin Islands.
Berman said he would probably announce his bail decision on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. EDT (1330 GMT), saying he needed more time to absorb the case.
He faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted.
Lawyers for Epstein said their client, who wore dark blue jail scrubs in court, has had an unblemished record since he pleaded guilty more than a decade ago to a state prostitution charge in Florida and agreed to register as a sex offender.
While much of the early legal sparring has focused on questions of Epstein's freedom, a secondary struggle may determine how much money Epstein has - and what he will owe and to whom when it's all over.
Annie Farmer said she was 16 when Epstein had her sent to New Mexico where he was "inappropriate" with her. Courtney Wild told the judge she was 14 when Epstein sexually abused her in Palm Beach, Florida.
Epstein is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, a fortress-like jail, according to Reuters.

Steve Bruce has resigned as manager of Sheffield Wednesday
The Magpies have sold Ayoze Perez to Leicester and his strike partner from last season, Salomon Rondon is back at West Brom. Bruce confirmed talks with Newcastle had taken place over the weekend and a deal isn't far off.
The Duke of York has consistently denied the claims and a judge threw out her allegations because they were "immaterial and impertinent to the central claim" against Epstein.
In addition to the passport, USA authorities reportedly discovered diamonds and cash in Epstein's safe, uncovered during the raid of his mansion following his July 6 arrest, Fox News said Monday.
Epstein is accused of sexually abusing underage girls as young as 14 years old and collecting child pornography.
He served 13 months in a county jail, but was allowed to leave during the day to go to his office. Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, who was the top federal prosecutor in Miami at the time, resigned from President Donald Trump's Cabinet on Friday amid criticism over the deal.
Prosecutors said a search of Epstein's home uncovered nude images of underage girls, and they accused him of paying two potential witnesses against him past year in an apparent effort to influence them.
In addition, police reports, court documents and interviews with victim attorneys revealed a number of intimidation and bare-knuckle tactics that accusers and witnesses told police they faced after Florida authorities opened their first investigation into Epstein.
Prosecutors said Epstein had made two payments totaling $350,000 two days after the Miami Herald published a series on his alleged crimes in November.
