The health department says no human cases of the West Nile virus have been reported in the county so far this year, but two cases were reported last year.
Many people who have been infected with the illness do not show symptoms, which run the gamut of severity from mild to severe. Less than one percent of those infected will develop a serious neurologic illness, such as encephalitis or meningitis.
Supervisor Erin Courtney said the process helps control mosquito larvae and reduces the incidence of West Nile virus. People over the age of 50 and people with weak immune systems are at greater risk of developing severe illness. That could lead to inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, muscle paralysis or even death.Читайте также: Serena 'available' for mixed doubles as Murray seeks partner
West Nile virus is an arboviral disease that people can contact through the bite of a mosquito that has fed on an infected bird.
"Once a week, we suggest empty, turn over, or throw out any items that might hold water", she said, "like tires, buckets, flower pots, birdbaths, anything like that - because mosquitoes actually like to lay their eggs near that stagnant water".
Residents may reduce risk by applying mosquito repellent, wearing trousers and long sleeves when outdoors and getting rid of standing water that gives mosquitoes a place to breed. "It can give you some other options that are proven to work just as well". She said vehicles will be equipped with a flashing yellow rooftop light, West Nile virus signs and "Makes Frequent Stops" caution sign.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
