France said on Wednesday anti-tank missiles it bought from the United States and were later found in a base belonging to troops loyal to Libya's eastern commander Khalifa Haftar were never intended for sale or transfer to any party to Libya's conflict.
It added the missiles were "broken and unusable" and "being briefly stocked at a depot before their destruction".
The New York Times reported earlier this week that the cache of four Javelin anti-tank missiles was recovered by Libyan government forces during a surprise attack on a rebel camp in the town of Gheryan located in the mountains south of Tripoli. She said there were unanswered questions about whether French troops were present when the base was overrun.
