The Goma case is frightening given the town's proximity with Rwanda, and the disease could easily spread beyond the border if not contained, a health official in Rwanda's border district of Rubavu told Anadolu Agency on Monday.

In June, the Ministry of Health said it was taking the Ebola outbreak in both neighbouring countries seriously and intensified the surveillance at points of entry, at health facilities and at community levels.

"Because of the speed with which the patient was identified and isolated, and the identification of all the other bus passengers coming from Butembo, the risk of it spreading in the rest of the city of Goma is small", the health ministry said.
The recent Ebola epidemic which has claimed the lives of 1665 people has so far been confined to the north and this new case tests the measures in place.
The current outbreak is the worst on record after the Ebola epidemic struck mainly Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone between 2014 and 2016, leaving more than 11,300 people dead.
"There is a grave risk of a major increase in numbers, or spread to new locations - as we've heard today in Goma", said Josie Golding, a specialist on epidemics at the Wellcome Trust global health charity.
"We are dealing with one of the world's most risky viruses in the one of the world's most unsafe areas", Ghebreyesus said.
But efforts to roll back Ebola have been hampered by insecurity in a region plagued by militia groups, who have attacked treatment centres.
