Veteran diplomat Kim Darroch said he could no longer do his job in Washington after Trump branded him a fool and cut off all contact with the representative of one of the US's closest allies.
'For someone who wants to lead, let alone unite, the country, that was contemptible negligence on his part, ' he said. He said that Boris had "thrown our top diplomat under a bus".
"The United States and the United Kingdom share a bond that is bigger than any individual, and we look forward to continuing that partnership", a State Department spokeswoman said.
And while Boris Johnson's hesitation in backing him was a factor in Darroch's resignation, it was not the main reason.
Friends said Sir Kim initially accepted the plea but decided he had to go after Mr Johnson refused to back him during a live TV debate with leadership rival Jeremy Hunt on Tuesday night.
There were also indications that Sir Kim chose to resign after he failed to win the backing of former foreign secretary Boris Johnson, who is leading the race to replace Ms.
"Since the leak of official documents from this Embassy there has been a great deal of speculation surrounding my position", he said in his resignation letter.
"The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like", he said.Читайте также: British Royal Marines Seize Tanker Allegedly Carrying Iranian Oil to Syria
"Although my posting is not due to end until the end of this year, I believe in the current circumstances, the responsible course is to allow the appointment of a new ambassador".
The motive for the leak has also become hotly debated, with suggestions that hard-line supporters of Brexit were eager to see Sir Kim leave Washington because of his previous post as Britain's ambassador to the European Union, where he was perceived as a proponent of Britain remaining in the EU.
"The whole Cabinet rightly gave its full support to Sir Kim on Tuesday", she said. "Good government depends on public servants being able to give full and frank advice", she told the House of Commons on Wednesday and added that she deeply regretted his decision to step down.
Farage said this week he was not the right man for the job, but on Wednesday, after Darroch's resignation, tweeted: "The right decision, time (to) put in a non-Remainer who wants a trade deal with America".
Earlier, Health Secretary Matt Hancock, a leading supporter of Mr Johnson, defended his refusal to support Sir Kim, saying it was important to fix relations with the White House.
"It is our most important diplomatic relationship", he said.
Mr. Johnson has a close relationship with Mr. Trump and the U.S. President has spoken highly of him.
Speaking at a conference on media freedom, Hunt also criticised Trump's verbal attacks on journalists.
That broadside against Britain and its leader, long a staunch US ally, drew a sharp rebuke Tuesday from British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who said Trump's comments were "disrespectful and wrong".При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
