The family said that early indications point to both husband and wife contracting a debilitating virus.
It's believed the couple from Fort Worth had been planning their "amazing vacation" to Fiji for quite some time, leaving behind their two-year-old son and a daughter from David Paul's previous relationship with family in the U.S. for the two week trip.
"They knew something was going on in their body and were able to get to the hospital", Calanog told the outlet.
"[David was] very physically fit, former Air Force [officer, and a] former student-athlete", Calanog told the news outlet.
Calanog said the couple loved to travel and had been organizing the Fiji trip for some time: "They were planning an unbelievable vacation", she said.
'Nobody is telling me what was the cause of the death and that's very hard for me, ' he said.
After her passing, hospital staff reportedly planned to transfer David to an Australian hospital by helicopter for additional treatment but he died shortly before they could, according to KVUE.
