'We have worked hard over a long period of time to be able to offer the best end to end 5G experience. "5G is a game changer for Three, and of course I am excited that we will be the only operator in the United Kingdom who can offer true 5G".
Three's eyebrow-raising speed claims are based on it having more 5G spectrum than rival networks, with 140MHz of the stuff.
EE has already said that peak speeds on its 5G network right now could exceed 1Gbps, so if both EE and Three are right, then that would mean peak speeds of over 2Gbps on Three's 5G network, which is seriously fast. In fact, Three's initial launch will be for 5G home broadband and will be limited to London. The selected locations are Birmingham, Bolton, Bradford, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Reading, Rotherham, Sheffield, Slough, Sunderland and Wolverhampton. Note that these networks have more spectrum than that in total, it's just not spectrum that's ideal for 5G use.
The company said its 5G services will offer much better speeds and capacity than its competitors due to its extensive spectrum holdings and investment in high-capacity "smart" antennas.

United Kingdom consumers are predicted to consume 13 times more mobile data in 2025 than today and 5G is hoped to cater with this extra demand. Three may be somewhat late to the party, but its network should be available in most towns by the end of the year: 25, compared to 19 for Vodafone and 16 for EE.
But Three is confident that it has acquired more useful spectrum than its rivals, and when consumers really start to take an interest in 5G next year it will be well-placed to race ahead.
In other news, Vodafone is shutting down 3G to bolster its 5G networks but insists its 2G will continue for now.
Only a handful of phones are now able to support 5G, but major manufacturers such as OnePlus and Samsung have already announced handsets capable of supporting the fifth generation of cellular networks.
