The Connecticut Huskies cheerleaders and mascot perform during the regional semifinal of the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Madison Square Garden on March 28, 2014 in New York City.
The Shockers played their first AAC men's basketball game at CT on December 30, 2017 when they defeated the Huskies, 72-62, at the XL Center in Hartford.
That round of realignment was entirely driven by football and the lucrative money that comes with playing in one of the Power 5 conferences.
Fans have placed much of the blame on the school's conference situation.
The Big East declined to comment, sources said the conference has yet to have an official vote of whether to extend an invitation to UConn. The Big East is also a slight uptick in competition level, at least in men's basketball, as the Big East has been ranked significantly higher than the American in KenPom rankings the past six years.

UConn does not plan to move its football program out of the FBS as it looks for a new home. Basketball - not football - is school's marquee sport, and the football program hasn't been anywhere near productive or profitable enough to warrant any such move now or ever. However, UConn must figure out what to do with its football program.
Statement from UConn: "It is our responsibility to always be mindful of what is in the best interest of our student athletes, our fans and our future". The Huskies are now a member of the American Athletic Conference.
A possibility for the American in replacing UConn would be to add Army or Air Force as a football-only school, as it now has with Navy, and then add a successful basketball program.
Fans have clamored to return to the Big East, where they view UConn as a more natural fit. The AAC will nearly definitely not house the team, which leaves UConn the options of joining a smaller league, like the MAC, or going on as an independent, which presents distinct scheduling challenges, especially for a relatively remote Northeastern program.
