President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday that he argued will allow patients to better shop for medical services, by requiring hospitals, insurers, and providers to share prices upfront.
Trump's order will also require that patients be told ahead of time what their out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and copays will be for many procedures. "White House officials said the details would be worked out during the rule-making process".
He said there were some "very fine people on both sides" after white nationalist marchers clashed with opposition protesters in 2017 in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Trump has been accused of equivocating on the threat posed by white supremacist individuals and groups during his presidency.
It remains to be seen how effectively this executive order can be implemented. "We will empower patients with the information they need to search for the lowest costs and the highest quality care".
Charles "Chip" Kahn III, president of the Federation for American Hospitals, said the health-care industry "should be doing everything we can" to provide timely, useful information to help consumers make sound health-care decisions.

The idea behind Trump's order is to give patients practical information they can use to save money.
Eyles said the industry supports giving patients accurate information about their costs, but publishing negotiated rates would create "a floor - not a ceiling - for the prices that hospitals would be willing to accept".
"It sounds simple to reveal prices to a government agency that then would make them available to the public". In addition, the order directs HHS to collaborate with other departments to curb a hospital billing problem that also has gained attention in Congress: patients saddled with unexpectedly large medical costs because they did not realize some doctors who treated them were out of their insurance network.
"Currently, patients do not have adequate tools to find the doctors who would deliver better health outcomes at an affordable cost", Trump said.
- Expanded uses for health savings accounts, a tax-advantaged way to pay health care bills that has always been favored by Republicans.
Azar pushed back against that argument, saying insurers do ultimately disclose their payment rates when they send individual patients an "explanation of benefits".
"Every time any one of us goes to a doctor or a hospital, within a couple of weeks in our mailbox arrives an explanation of benefits".
"This is not some great state secret out there", he said.
The order follows the administration making a requirement for drug manufacturers to disclose their drug prices in their television advertisements.
