Warren Gatland has been confirmed as head coach of the British and Irish Lions for the 2021 tour of South Africa.
Gatland won his third Six Nations Grand Slam with Wales this year and has been named as a possible successor to Eddie Jones when he steps down as England head coach in August 2021.
He was also an assistant to Ian McGeechan - the only other man to have coached the Lions on three different Tours - when they last toured South Africa, losing the 2009 series 2-1.
Gatland will relinquish his role as Wales boss after the World Cup and will then start his official Lions duties in August 2020.
Nonetheless, Fitzgerald is right in raising the point that Lions tours are about the fusion of ideas and styles from different coaches and players, which is limited by having the same person four eight years. The Lions rightly have a truly special place in the game and I jumped at the chance to be involved again when I was approached about the role.
Undoubtedly Gatland and the Lions were more pleased with the outcome but he has at least acknowledged demand could be there for extra time if the series in South Africa is square heading into the final test. "Playing in South Africa presents a number of unique challenges, such as playing at altitude, while the Boks will always be physical, aggressive and highly motivated".

BBC axes free licences for over-75s
Christopher Biggins has spoken of his anger at the BBC's decision not to continue with free TV licences for all over-75s. Households without anyone who receives Pension Credit will have to pay for a TV license under the new policy.
"I can promise you 100 per cent I won't be coaching England", he told the BBC.
Gatland has been coaching in the northern hemisphere for the best part of thirty years, and has held roles with Connacht, Ireland, Wasps, as well as his current position with Wales.
"I love the Lions as a concept".
"Yeah I think so, I would have done the rounds".
With the Premiership, in particular, and separate clubs pushing for a reduction in the Lions game schedule, Gatland was asked if he could possibly select a smaller squad for 2021.
"I've been extremely privileged to have the honour of being involved with the Lions, this will be my fourth tour, and I'm so thankful to have been given the opportunity".
Speaking about his latest appointment, which was widely expected, Gatland said he had "unfinished business" against the Springboks. I'm looking forward to working alongside him to give the Lions the best chance of success in South Africa.
