"Gloria Vanderbilt was 95 years old when she died".
During the 1930s she was the subject of a high-profile child custody trial in which her mother, Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt, and her paternal aunt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, each sought custody of her and control over her trust fund.
He added: "She was a painter, a writer, and designer but also a remarkable mother, wife, and friend".
Vanderbilt was celebrated in the fashion world in the 1970s and went on to sell millions of pairs of jeans with her trademark white swan logo. They discussed her life, the famous, infamous, and everyday people in it, her relationships, her career, and her dreams for the future. Her work also graced a collection of scarves before she started the line of jeans and expanded to perfume, shoes, leather goods and accessories.

A descendant of Cornelius Vanderbilt, a shipping and railroad magnate, she inherited about US$4 million at age 21, much of which was spent by the time she was in her 40s.
Jones Apparel Group bought Gloria Vanderbilt Apparel Corp.in 2002 for $138 million, and Vanderbilt delved wholesale back into her love for art and writing.
Whitney eventually won custody of Gloria with one judge reproaching the girl's mother for living a lifestyle that was "calculated to destroy her health and neglectful of her moral, spiritual and mental education". She temporarily moved in with her son, Anderson Cooper, telling the New York Post she was "not broke". There were paintings she wanted to make, more books she wanted to read, more dreams to dream.

Gloria Vanderbilt lived her entire life in the public eye. "I always felt it my job to protect her".
"I don't think age has anything to do with what you write about", she told The New York Times.
She married four times: to the playboy Pat DiCicco; to the composer Leopold Stokowski; to the film director Sidney Lumet; finally to the writer Wyatt Emory Cooper.
The "poor little rich girl" nickname "bothered me enormously", Vanderbilt told The Associated Press in 2016.
"I never knew we had the exact same giggle", Cooper said during a visit before her death.
"She had no idea the trouble money would make", Cooper said of the 95-year-old Vanderbilt, who died of stomach cancer Monday. She was ready to go.
Of his mother's extraordinary life, Anderson Cooper said, "I always thought of her as a visitor from another world, a traveler stranded here who'd come from a distant star that burned out long ago".
Vanderbilt wrote several books throughout her life, including "It Seemed Important at the Time: A Romance Memoir", in 2004 which detailed her marriages and other men she dates - from Frank Sinatra to Marlon Brando - throughout her life.
"What an extraordinary life. And what an incredible woman", he finished.
