Lisa Blanco, wife of Dominican television presenter Joel Lopez who was wounded in a shooting incident along with former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz (Big Papi), talks to the press outside the clinic where both men are being treated after being shot while in a bar in the city of Santo Domingo on June 9, 2019.
Dr. Abel Gonzalez, who performed the surgery, said part of Ortiz's intestines and liver were removed. Patrons of the lounge caught Garcia and violently beat him in the aftermath of the shooting.
Ortiz was shot Sunday at a club in eastern Santo Domingo, a bustling nightlife district packed with dance clubs and bars.
Reports have since surfaced that Big Papi was shot as a result of dealing with the wife of a drug lord, which might explain why the shooter came into the bar and only targeted him.
Police said Ortiz was shot at almost point-blank range by a man identified as Eddy Feliz Garcia, 25. He is still in the intensive care unit, and doctors say he is in stable condition.
