A deep natural disaster of magnitude 7.5 struck off the coasts of East Timor and Indonesia on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, and Pacific monitoring authorities ruled out the chance of tsunami.
Darwin residents have been shaken up by a 7.2 magnitude quake.
The quake, which hit at a depth of about 208 kilometers (129 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey, was felt by residents in the Australian city of Darwin.
People as far away as Wichita and North Platte, Nebraska, reported feeling the quake.
The USGS says the natural disaster struck at 8:53 p.m.at a spot 17.3 miles southwest of Scotia, a town of 850 people. There are no immediate reports of damage.
"It was certainly something that was felt quite strongly in the Darwin CBA area", he said.
