South Bend, Indiana (CNN)Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg faced the raw and unvarnished emotion of his community at a town hall in South Bend, Indiana, on Sunday as the mayor attempted to soothe the pain caused by the recent killing of a black man by a police officer.
Buttigieg, instead of joining most of the other Democratic presidential candidates at Rep. Jim Clyburn's World Famous Fish Fry in SC, had the hard job of facing the grief and anger of black South Bend residents who believe he is not doing enough to prevent deaths like that of 54-year-old Eric Logan's.
During the tense event, Buttigieg tried to explain how officers will review the shooting and said he would ask the Justice Department to review the case and for an independent prosecutor to look into it as well.
He also acknowledged the department has fallen short in recruiting minority police officers and introducing body cameras. Prosecutors investigating the death of Logan say the shooting was not recorded on the body camera worn by Sgt O'Neill.
The incident happened the same day Buttigieg was scheduled to speak at a town hall with South Bend's police chief.
According to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office, O'Neill was responding last Sunday to a report of a person breaking into cars.Читайте также: Ethiopian Army chief, Regional President Killed in Coup Attempt, Unrest
Others in the audience continuously interrupted Buttigieg as he spoke on stage, shouting rude comments and profanities the mayor's way. "Reorganize your department. You can do that by Friday".
He has since directed his police chief to order all South Bend police officers to turn their body cameras on when interacting with civilians while on duty. When confronted, Logan approached the officer with a 6- to 8-inch knife raised over his head, Cotter said.
A statement says that five of the 10 wounded remain in the hospital in stable condition.
Violence has flared again in the in city where Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg is mayor.
The mayor, who is white, has been struggling to attract support for his presidential bid among black voters, a vital constituency in a Democratic nominating contest.
During the town hall, he called the fallout between the community and police department 'very challenging'.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
