Australian tennis player Ashleigh Barty has cinched the top spot in the world tennis rankings after beating Germany's Julia Görges 6-3, 7-5, in Sunday's final of the Nature Valley Classic in Birmingham.
"I thought the US Open was the slam she would win first", he said.
"It happens when I have a spike in load, it's just a bone stress injury and I need to look after it".
"We had a very vague plan to try and get back in obviously to the rhythm of it and to playing again", Barty said about her comeback.
"Evonne has been an incredible champion of our sport, she is the most genuine human being you'll ever meet and even to be mentioned in the same conversation with her is a little bit mind-boggling to me", said Barty, who is only the second Australian woman to occupy the No. 1 ranking and first since Goolagong Cawley in 1976. "We just have to be careful that we manage it properly the next three or four days, to make sure I'm ready to go".
