For Apple to divest the Mac of Intel CPUs while maintaining X86 compatibility will require some serious engineering skill. Filippo was involved in the design of processors, and his contribution was particularly significant at Arm, where he was in charge of the development of various architectures.
Apple continues to reinforce its chip design division: it recently hired Mike Filippo, who has a ten-year history at Arm, as well as working at Intel and AMD. "Mike was a long-time valuable member of the ARM community", a company's representative said. The profile says his last position was lead CPU architect at Arm, where he worked for 10 years.
APPLE HAS SNAPPED UP a top engineer from chip designer ARM, further pushing the idea that Cupertino might want to move away from Intel chips. Part of what makes the iPhone operate so smoothly despite its comparatively weaker specs (compared to Android flagships) is how Apple has been able to optimize iOS; Apple's mobile OS is designed specifically to work with its hardware instead of around it.

In May, Apple reportedly hired Mark Filippo, a lead architect behind the chips that power most of the world's smartphones and tablets, including the Cortex-A76, which was used in Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 855 SoC.
It's unclear when exactly Apple plans to start introducing ARM chips into the Mac, but it could comes as soon as 2020.
Bloomberg speculates that Filippo could possibly be filling a key spot at Apple that was left empty after Gerard Williams III, the head architect for Apple's processors, departed the company earlier this year.
