The Secretary-General recalled that he had encountered that resistance at COP24, the 2018 United Nations climate change conference.
"New Zealand is helping to show the world that a just transition to a low emissions economy is possible and can lead to sustainable development and inclusive growth", Mr. Guterres said.
A pollution tax was one of the recommendations the Tax Working Group suggested the Government implement in its final report, released in February this year.
Mr Guterres added to those sentiments yesterday warning that Pacific nations are on the frontlines of climate change.
"I look forward to working closely with New Zealand to launch concrete action-oriented initiatives in which the public and private sector can come together for transformational change", Mr. Guterres said.
"The paradox is that as things are getting worse on the ground, political will seems to be fading."
