The White House said Wednesday it dispatched the aircraft carrier and B-52 bombers to the Persian Gulf over what it described as a new threat from Iran. However, a build-up of "deterrent forces" around Iran is necessary so that the USA could respond if Iran "decided to come after an American interest - whether that be in Iraq, or Afghanistan, or Yemen, or any place in the Middle East".
Iran has dismissed both moves - which the United States said it took after USA intelligence signaled possible preparations by Tehran to attack US forces or interests - as "psychological warfare" created to intimidate it.
There was no immediate reaction from Tehran on the latest USA moves, but earlier in the week it shrugged off the carrier deployment.
While the United States military has become a semi-permanent fixture in the Persian Gulf, it's unusual for Washington to call out Iran by name when justifying such deployments. "We have time till August this year to legally respond to Iran's legal notice and settle the issue through negotiations", Saulat said.
Japanese refiners are tapping more oil from the Middle East after the United States ended all waivers from sanctions on Iran starting from this month.
"Iran or its proxies could respond by targeting commercial vessels, including oil tankers, or USA military vessels in the Red Sea or the Persian Gulf".
The verbal exchange comes as tensions escalate between Washington and Tehran.
"During the war we did not have a problem with our banks, oil sales or imports and exports, and there were only sanctions on arms purchases", Mr Rouhani told political activists in the capital, Tehran.
Washington last month had blacklisted Iran's Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist group.
