In a post in its newsroom, Samsung announced today it has created two new camera sensors which are designed for smartphones - one 48MP, and another with a whopping 64MP resolution.
Like the increasingly common 48MP sensors found throughout the smartphone landscape, Samsungs new 64MP shooter will employ the Tetracell binding technology. Previously, such small pixel sizes were unfeasible because of the huge deficit they represented in low light imaging, as a smaller pixel size represents decreased light sensitivity. According to the company, the sensor also able to deliver bright 16MP output during low-light conditions with the help of its Tetracell pixel-merging technology. Introduced last October, Tetracell can be used to merge four pixels into one larger pixel to capture more light detail in hard conditions. Regular image camera sensors are in the range of 60-decibels (dB).

The ISOCELL Bright GW1 features a Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) that converts the received light into an electric signal according to the illumination of the environment, according to Samsung. This is said to allow the sensor to optimize its full well capacity (FWC) by using collected light more efficiently especially in bright settings.
Samsung has also updated 48Mp ISOCELL Bright GM2 which has now embraced the Tetracell technology for better low-light photos and remosaic algorithm in brighter environment. Much like the 64-megapixel sensor, the new 48-megapixel sensor also gets Super PD for high-performance phase detection auto-focus.
