Sumbal: Four days after a youth was arrested for allegedly raping a three-year-old girl in Bandipora district of north Kashmir, police sources said preliminary medical examination has revealed he is not a minor. They even demanded the accused be hanged.
The spokesman said a separate inquiry has also been ordered to check the veracity of the age of the accused and ascertain the authenticity of the age certificate.
The assault is the latest incident of violence against women in India. Protesters closed the Srinagar-Baramulla highway.
On Monday, allegations emerged that the principal of another school issued a certificate for the accused that he was a minor. "We appeal to the public to stay calm and not heed to any rumours", Bandipora Deputy Commissioner Shahbaz Mirza was quoted as saying, after protests were recorded in as many as 12 locations on Sunday.
"Justice will be done and the culprit will be given fair punishment as per the law", he said.
