Empire will end its roller-coaster run on Fox after the upcoming sixth season, the network announced Monday, ahead of its Upfront presentation in the afternoon. One of the great benefits of announcing a final season is to give the fans the ending they deserve.
Speaking to reporters during a press call Monday, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier revealed that Season 6 will be the show's last.
"We're turning the final season of Empire into a large television event". "There's an option to have Jussie in the series but we have no plans for that", he said, noting the series' writers have yet to start working on the Season 6 script.
Dropped less than a week after the fifth season wrapped up, news of the cancellation also shifts the Chicago-filmed show back to its original Tuesday slot at 9 p.m.

Will Jussie Smollett be back?
During last season, Smollett, 36, who is gay and black, claimed that he was the victim of an attack that he said was racially and politically motivated, as well as homophobic. However, it looks like those efforts were made in vain. The actor had been written out of the last two episodes of Season 5 following his legal controversy in which he was accused of faking a hate crime attack against himself.
Smollett claimed a pair of masked attackers yelled "this is MAGA country" - a reference to President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" 2016 campaign slogan - put a noose around his neck, and poured a substance that smelled like bleach on him while beating him in a Chicago street around 2 a.m. January 29 in near zero temperatures.
