The company building the new supercomputer, named Frontier, is Cray Inc., which will use high-performance AMD EPYC CPU and Radeon Instinct GPU technology in the system, and it will boast a performance greater than 1.5 exaflops.
Dubbed Frontier, the exascale machine will be built for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) by 2021.
"Frontier's record-breaking performance will ensure our country's ability to lead the world in science that improves the lives and economic prosperity of all Americans and the entire world".
It will do so, "by giving American researchers world-class data and computing resources to ensure the next great inventions are made in the United States".

Tennessee-based ORNL is home to several of the world's top supercomputers, including reigning champion Summit, which now sits at No. 1 in the world, with a performance of 143.5 petaflops.
Frontier will, like most supercomputers, be used for extreme weather forecasting, advancing medical research, amongst other incredibly compute-intensive problems. In March, Argonne National Laboratory announced a $500 million contract with Intel Corp. and Cray for Aurora, a 1-exaflop machine. "Frontier will incorporate foundational new technologies from Cray and AMD that will enable the new exascale era - characterized by data-intensive workloads and the convergence of modeling, simulation, analytics, and AI for scientific discovery, engineering and digital transformation".
"Frontier will feature custom CPU and GPU technology from AMD and represents the latest achievement on a long list of technology innovations AMD has contributed to the Department of Energy exascale programs", AMD's SVP and GM, Forrest Norrod said regarding the Frontier Project. The whole system will run on an open-source programming environment developed in collaboration with Cray to extract maximum power out of the AMD hardware.
The Frontier is to be installed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee State where Summit is now installed.
