"Fox News reported on Monday that Attorney General Bill Barr had assigned John Durham, the USA attorney in CT, to conduct the inquiry into alleged misconduct and alleged improper government surveillance on the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election, as well as whether Democrats were the ones who improperly colluded with foreign actors", reports Fox News.
On November 1, 2017, he was nominated by President Donald Trump to be Connecticut's next U.S. Attorney.
Barr drew the ire of top Democrats last month when he confirmed that he believed the FBI's surveillance of Page and other campaign officials constituted "spying", though he stopped short of asserting the surveillance activity was not properly predicated. "An informant working for USA intelligence posed as a Cambridge University research assistant in September 2016 to try to probe George Papadopoulos, then a Trump foreign policy adviser, on the campaign's possible ties to Russian Federation, it emerged earlier this month".
FBI Director Chris Wray said last week that he does not consider court-approved FBI surveillance to be "spying" and said he has no evidence the FBI illegally monitored Trump's campaign.

Durham's new assignment comes just weeks after the US Justice Department's release in mid-April of the redacted version of the long-awaited report summarizing the outcome of the investigation into allegations of Trump-Russia collusion and Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 US election.
Congressional Republicans have also said they'll look into how the investigation began and whether there are any legal concerns.
Durham is a career prosecutor who was nominated for his post as US attorney in CT by Trump.
In addition to conducting the inquiry, Durham will continue to serve as the chief federal prosecutor in CT.
