Announced last October, Amazon's Alexa Guard feature has finally arrived in the United States, turning Echo speakers across the country into loyal watchdogs. You can, however, connect Alexa Guard to a professionally-monitored security system (for example, Ring Alarm or ADT Pulse) which then allows Smart Alerts to be forwarded to the security service provider. When you're going out, say "Alexa, I'm leaving" and Guard will start listening for specific sounds. Once the device is in away mode, it listens for things like smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, or the sound of glass breaking. Guard will only detect these sounds when set to Away mode. That page also has instructions on how to set up Alexa Guard if you've already got Echo devices dotting the rooms in your house, so it's a pretty good resource for those looking to get the ball rolling on the basic monitoring Alexa now offers.
The new defense system is compatible with the entire family of Echo devices. Teckin Mini Smart Outlets work with an app, Alexa, and Google Assistant, and they can be had right now for just $7.50 each when you buy a 4-pack.

It's straightforward: What if the Echo speakers in your home could detect threats and then help make you instantly aware of them? Amazon tells us that Echo owners can set up and enable Amazon Guard features nearly instantly using the Alexa app. However, Echo product owners in Australia couldn't get Apple Music to work with Alexa yet due to country limitations. It delivers down-firing, 100W of bass through its 6-inch woofer, and you can pair it with an Echo or two to create a 2.1 stereo system. Using machine learning, it was able to teach Alexa how to listen and recognise these types of sounds so that it can better understand when to alert you of a potential break-in or hazard. When you return home, say "Alexa, I'm home" to turn the feature off again.
