A representative from the Topeka Zoo says a male tiger injured a female keeper Saturday morning.
The zookeeper suffered lacerations and puncture wounds to the back of the head, neck and back.
The zookeeper was "alert and awake" at the time she was taken to the hospital, Hadfield said.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the incident happened around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, when a Sumatran tiger named Sanjiv tackled the worker in an enclosed outdoor space.
"Sanjiv, this morning, did exactly what a tiger would when something comes into its territory".

The zoo was closed for 45 minutes after the attack and its six tigers, including Sanjiv and his four cubs, were kept in their pen.
